An Analysis of the "Weird" Video in Words and Pictures:
Part 2

mandy likes this

I snapped this picture because my sister Mandy thought this was a cool part of the video. Tay is sliding down the painting, which we now get to see. The room is rotating, so the laws of gravity force Tay to scrape his sneakers along this excellent reproduction of classical art. This is shot so that the room is "right-side up." The painting is on the wall, the couch is facing in the right direction and so is the chair. But, as you can see, this isn't the way the room really was. Like I said before, the room is actually on its side. The real "right-side up" is the direction Ike and Tay are facing.

entering the water

We now are entering the water. Very Terminator 2-like (the water stuff, I mean). Let's all reflect on the fact that Zac now has the longest hair. And why does Taylor get to open the door? Poor Zac does almost nada in the water scene.

tay is a fish

I completely cracked up when I first saw this picture because, man, look at Tay's lips. They're a completely round circle. He's a fish! Now, what does the water scene mean? After long and careful thought about this, I have come up with nothing, other than the fact that it is darn weird. It doesn't relate to anything in the song (I don't think). It's just plain strange and weird. Cool effects though.

more water

Here we have Tay again. Tay releases the most bubbles in the water scene (meaning he's losing the most air). Zac lets out almost no bubbles (probably because the poor boy doesn't sing a thing in this scene). Good facial expressions, though. It's pretty darn hard to be emotional when you have no air in your lungs.

thank goodness they show Zac

At least there is a shot of Zac in this scene, even if he doesn't sing. I thought I would take the time to remind all of you how this scene was done. Tay told the story on MTV Live, but not all of you have that. The boys were weighted down (with small weights) during this scene. They couldn't go to the surface even if they wanted to (which I'm sure at times they did). In between takes, crew members would stick scuba tubes in their mouths so they could breath. Whenever they ran out of breath, they would have to motion that they needed air and the scene would stop. This was filmed in a pool which I think was in LA. The subway train was filmed seperately in New York (without the guys in it). Since the bottom of the pool was blue, they could use a technique called blue screen filming. Everything that is blue in the original pool scene is replaced with the subway scene. (So it's a good idea that they not wear blue clothing, which they aren't).

he just looks weird

Sorry, Ike just looks strange in this shot. I think he should have worn more form fitting atire, because throughout the scene his shirts were floating out and falling off his shoulders (not all the way of course). He should have actually taken his cue from Taylor, whose clothing is very, very form fitting in all the subway scenes. You will see a little later on.

Ike again

Really, what more is there to say? Ike was very emotional in this scene, getting into the lyrics. He actually probably did the best at lip synching underwater.

They leave the water

Here they are leaving the water. Sorry, I couldn't get Ike into the shot (he the thing emerging from the water). The video just goes too fast. But, hey! Look, doesn't it look like the exact same place where they jumped into the water? Where were they swimming. They obviously didn't get too far. Now we see the extreme form fitting nature of Tay's shirt. I think he needs more meat on his bones before he'll be able to pull that off. Please, Tay, look at Zac. His shirt is the normal size for a person his height and weight. Does he just buy it two sizes too small or something? Or...uh...maybe it's supposed to fit that way...

More of Lisa's brilliant analysis...
