MTV Europe Selectvideo Interview (June 17, 1998)
Typed and submitted by Pascalle.
First they showed the videos of MMMBop and Weird (still no River!!!).
Then the interview started. Tay was wearing a beautiful knitted sweater, red with a white kind of tiger print, worn jeans and white shoes. Ike had a green sweater on and Zac a black t-shirt. They looked very relaxed and Zac was kind of quiet. Funny was that the interviewer, a pretty brunette called Ulrike, was wearing a shirt with a LOT of cleavage and especially Tay couldn't keep his eyes from wandering lol! He had this big smile all the time and was a bit flirty. Ike also looked more at the womans bustline then at her face and he and Tay were kind of laughing, you could see what they were thinking. Zac however, seemed oblivious to all that. LOL
Well, now to the interview:
Ulrike= U
Ike= I
Tay=T
Zac=Z
U: Welcome back to selectvideo MTV and now here in the studio with me I've got Hanson and I'm so excited about it!
U: Hello! Welcome to the show!
Ike, Tay, Zac: hello!
U: Hello, my name is Ulrike!
Z: Eureka??? (laughing)
U: This is Zac, Isaac and Taylor
U: You played Wembley Arena last night?
T & I: Yes we did
U: How did that go?
I: It went very well
U: Was it sold out?
T: Very well, sold out, it was an awesome crowd!
U: Screaming?
I: Yes
T: Yeah, very loud crowd actually. Well, the thing is it's set up..it's as if somebody.. the designer must have been really messed up, because the way it echoes it's like, you know (shakes his arms) and they kept doing this thing where they stomped and everything and you'd feel the shaking. It was like: Godzilla is in the building!!
I: Stampede!!
T: You know, it was awesome though
U: It was a good show yeah?
I: A very good show yeah
U: Cool, we're going to start the show by your first request
I: Okay
T: mm, first request is Madonna : Ray of light
They play the Madonna video
U: Welcome back to select MTV. That was Madonna with Ray of light, requested by Hanson, who I've got here with me in the studio.
T: That's a very cool video
U: It's a cool video isn't it , very nice. It's meant to be the day, the whole day in 5 minutes
T (joking): Except for where you've cut it though (they didn't show the whole video), so it's not like it's a day; you've ruined the concept!
I: like half a day, you've cut it off
U: Yes, oo, sorry everyone, sorry. Anyway, you've had a very hectic year now, haven't you?
I: We've had a hectic year, a hectic week and what not, and we, you know, we've just started our tour, The Albertane Tour, we just started doing that, and now we hit Paris and Cologne and just did London too.
U: But everyone we've been listening to here, we've had loads of asked questions about: are they coming to Israel, are they coming to
T: Yeah
U: Do you know where you're going?
T: Uhmm, we do know where we are going, unfortunately it's a really short tour, it's not very long...
I: Yeah
U: Is it?
T: We're just we're now heading back to North America and we'll be doing Canada and some, a few shows throughout the States, so.. Then we're gonna., really it's only a couple of months long, so we can get back into the studio and work on our next album.
U: So you're working on a new album?
T: We will be working on another album.
U: And when would that be coming out then?
T: Uhm, well, we hate to say too soon, so, I mean, no, no later then summer of next year, because we, you know, once the end of the summer comes, we'll finish touring, then we'll start working on it.
I: It's safe to say by this time next year it'll be out
U: It should be out
I: Yeah
T: You know
U: Okay, okay, I'm sure very many people will be happy to hear that.
Uhm, the ehh, your first single, the MMMBop, was exceptionally successful wasn't it?
I: Yeah, yeah
U: It was the first debut single to go number one at the same time both here and on the other side of the globe
T: Yeah
I: Yeah, yeah, it was actually quite amazing, it was pretty cool that people responded to your music that quickly and that well. And so, you know, you just, it, we've really had a great year and it's been very, very cool for us.
U: Okay, so, ehm, how does this feel all this then, it must be very, very overwhelming, to go so quickly from one..
T: uhm, it's, no it's fun,
I: Yeah
T: I mean it's not really that overwhelming, I mean it can be kind of crazy, you know, fans and all that kind of stuff, but it's fun, I mean it's overwhelming at times, but only in a good way.
U: Okay, we've got our first caller on the line now, it's Maaike, from Holland.
Hello Maaike!!
T: (in English accent) hello!
M: Hello!
I: Isaac picks up huge horn from phone (part of the props)
U: Hello how are you?
M: Great
I: puts horn back, but Zac picks it up again
Z: Maaike, are you on the phone? (in a very deep weird voice)
U: Have you got a question for Hanson?
Zac tries to put the horn back, Tay takes over it falls and there's a lot of noice, so nobody can hear Maaike anymore, lol!
U: Come again, we couldn't hear your question?
M (barely audible): EH..Who's voices are on the beginning of the song Soldiers fron the 3 car garage album?
T: Okay..
I: OHH
I: Okay well, yeah, 3 car garage is the, album that's from
T: it's the album that's from, there's a song that, yeah it's about a soldier, it's ehh (I guess they were kind of distracted by Ulrike here, lol)
I: About a tin soldier, eh the voices
U: Who does the voices?
T: The voices are done by our little sisters
I: Yeah, oh, right
T: Yeah, they are our little sisters, but
I: Yeah, we got them to come into the studio one time and talk for us, at the beginning, so..
U: Ah, I see, you've got loads of brothers and sisters, haven't you? How many of you are there?
T: Yes, seven kids
U: Seven kids all in all?
I: Seven kids in our family yeah, and we're the oldest three, yeah
U: Thank you for your question Maaike, were you happy with that?
M: Yes!
T: Thanks!
U: Bye, bye
I: Thanks!
U: So how many, how many, you have seven brothers and sisters?
T: Yeah, well, eh,
I, T, Z: Well there's seven including us yeah
U: seven of us okay, including you rather, not me (laughing)
I: Yeah, you're our new sister, you're our older sister!
T: You're including all of us
U: Can I join? Please, can I be the fourth Hanson?
T: Eh
Z: NO!!
U: no, I'm sorry (makes a sad face).
T: Well you could be, do you do music? (flirt!)
I: Hehehe
U: I've got our next caller on the line, it's Soraya from France
Hello Soraya!
S: Hello!
U: Hello, how are you?
S: Fine, thanks!
U: Have you got a question for Hanson?
S: Ehh, yeah, I'd like to know what you feel when you're on stage?
T: Wow, well, it's kind of hard to describe, I mean, you feel very excited, it's awesome, I mean
I: Yeah, you're just getting a chance to play your music for all those people that are out there. You just, you're having a lot of fun, I mean, there's nothing like playing your music for those, for people and eh..
T: And no, it's awesome, the energy of of the audience and just the whole experience, it's really
Z: It's just..
T: There's no real way to describe exactly how it is, but it is very, very fun
U: It's fantastic
I: It's very fun
Z: It's awesome!
U: So does that answer your question Soraya?
S: Yeah
T: Thanks!
I: Cool, thanks very much
U: So okay, who does, who writes the music then?
T: We do!
I: We do, all of us yeah
U: All of you together? Or is it one more then..
I: ehhm
T: It just depends on what song, sometimes one person will start a song and then the other two will kind of join in and complete it, but well, all three are always involved in the songs, so..
I: Yeah
T: You know, it just depends which one you're talking about, but we write all the songs, yeah.
U: So has it always been part of your lives, music?
I: Yeah, pretty much, I mean we just, it was just something that we found an interest in, and just naturally pursued it. It was, we just kind of started singing around the house and started singing songs that we'd listen to, we started listening to the 50's and 60's Rock and Roll at first.
T: And then I think it was just a natural thing, a natural progression to be a band, I guess
U: Oh, okay, Zac, you haven't talked too much so far, ehh, how long have you been playing you instruments, now then?
Z: Ehh, well, we've been a band for seven years and we've actually played instruments like a.. (looks at Tay for help)
T: A 'band' band
Z: A 'band' band for three years
I: Yeah
T: Actually it's almost four now
Z: Almost four now
T: Yeah, he picked up his drums, we got like an old drum set, from a friend, which had been sitting in his attic for like 25 years, and he got an old guitar, we already had a keyboard.
I: Yeah
U: Cool, there is an email request from Monique in Johannesburg: she also asks who are your main influences and idols?
I: Well, initially it was 50's and 60's Rock and Roll, eh you know, that was just the stuff that we heard first and so it influenced you the most, I think, initially, but very much modern music influences you in all kinds of ways.
T: Whatever's playing, I guess
U: Is that your parents who have given you that or..
T: Ehh, it was actually kind of weird, because the music we heard was even before their time. We, somehow, we got a tape from 1958, it was like a compilation of that year, and then we originally heard that and then slowly got more interested into that era, and now we have all kinds of stuff you know.
I: Yeah
T: So we're very into it
U: We've got another caller on the line, it's Ingrid from Spain!
Hello Ingrid!
T: Hi!
Ing: Hello Hanson!
I,T,Z: HI!
U: Have you got a question?
Ing.: I would like to know if you're going to do a live video?
T: Are we going to do a live video, ehmm, we are planning on doing a live video and,
I: like a longform video
T: A longform video, It's gonna be, there's a, we had a video called Tulsa, Tokyo, and the Middle Of Nowhere, which this will probably be a lot like that, only a lot of live performances and then hopefully a lot of behind the scenes things, and all kinds of stuff.
I: Yeah
T: We're very excited about that
I: It's very possible, well, you know, we're still in the process of making that I guess, you could say..
T: Yes, because we're on tour now, and
I: Because we're on tour
T: And hopefully we'll be able to shoot that..We'll be shooting that while we are on tour and then hopefully by the end of the..
U: Do you know which track that might be on?
I&T: Oh no, ehh
T: A live music video, or are you talking about a live video?
U: Ehm, I'm sorry yes, I misread that yes,
T: It's a live, we're talking about a live video that we'd sell
U: Do you mean a live film, Ingrid do you?
I mean a film, like a whole..
T: Or like a live music video?
Ing.: What??
U: Do you mean a live music video or a live video behind the scenes?
I: Yeah?
Ing.: Yes, a live video
U: Like a documentary sort of thing?
Ing.: Yes
T: Yes, you see, that's what we were talking about
I: Well, actually, we do also have, actually we kind of have two videos that are live
T: Music videos, right now, River, which is of of 3CG, has a lot of live performances in it, and Thinking of You is live, which we've kind of changed some things about it, and cut it, so
I: Yeah
U: You happy with that Ingrid?
Ing.: Okay, thank you, bye!
T: Thanks very much!
I: Thanks very much!
Ing.: Bye!
U: I have another question here, it's from Liron in Isreal, if you had to trade places with one of your brothers, who would it be?
And be, be inventive, now, don't say oh I'd rather be myself!
T: Trade places, well, ahh
I: Well actually if we'd trade places, it wouldn't hardly be much different, actually, honestly, I don't know, I don't know what it would be like to be my brothers
Z: The only thing that would be different like, would be I would have braces, I'd be taller, I'd have a deep voice..
T: (joking) You'd be uglier, you'd be uglier!
I: You'd be uglier too, yeah
U: Well, she also asks if you could be a famous person, who would it be, besides yourselves, obviously
I: Ehm
T: Well, ehmm, a famous person
I: I would be Steven Tyler from Aerosmith
T: You would be, you don't look like
I: No I don't, I don't look like Steven Tyler at all, ehh, Joe Perry, I'll be Joe Perry!
T: Yeah, that's more like it!
U: Big Idols?
I: I like them a lot actually, we've met them. We've actually spend time with them quite a bit (so now we know where Tay gets those funky outfits from!!!), recently. Seen them in a bunch of different places. First saw them actually at a show at MTV Europe awards
T: MTV
I: And ehh, just met, have run into them many times
Z: No, Ike, what would be weird, would be Steven Tyler as you!!
T: That's what I, that's what I (laughing)
I: That would be strange, that would be very strange!
U: Who would you like to be Zac?
Z: I don't wanna be anyone actually, I
I: You would be like..
Z: I would be air!!
T: Well the thing is..
Z: Air is very famous!
U: Yes
Z: It's on every tv show in the world!
U: Yes, do you know there is a band called AiR?
I: (laughing) It's everywhere!
T: There is a band called Air? Wow!
U: Yes, a French band
Z: No, but I would be stuff
I: Airlike
Zac sits with his hands in front of his face like an oxygenmask
I: Oxygen
T (to Ulrika): You're foiling his play here!
U: I'm sorry! Who would you wanna be?
T: I don't you know, I don't really ever think about that, I don't
Z: See, wait, that's the only problem, I would die!!
T: Is this, is it supposed to be a musician, or?
Z: You see, everyone's breathing me, so then I'm turning into carbon dioxide, then I'd be carbon dioxide, not air!
T: Exactly!
I: True!
U: But that's not a hero, is it?
T: Not a hero, but
I: (laughing) Air is not exactly our hero!
U: Have you not got a hero?
Z: Actually air is my hero, because I cannot live without air..Air is, air is. (crying voice)
T: Well Zac, it's okay, (he picks up the horn from the big phone and waves it at Zac) I might have to use this phone again!
U: So have you not got any heroes then?
T: Um, I can't think of one person in particular that is a hero, but we like, I mean, as far as music, we like all kinds of stuff
I: All kinds of stuff. We listen to anything from, we'd say In Vogue to Aerosmith, or Bob Dylan to Massive Attack, or something, we listen to all kinds of different stuff
T: Or like Oasis or Radiohead, I mean
U: Who ehhm, what about, ehm, I've just got a question here from Maya in Israel, in what ways are your lives different now you're huge awesome superstars?
T: Our lives are different because it's a little more hectic, yeah
Because you're going to different places all the time
I: You're doing a little bit more
T: Doing a little bit more, but it's, personally, we're not, I mean, hopefully we're not any different, we're just
I: I don't think much has changed
Z (in a funny voice): I want to say thank you for the awesome superstars, but I don't think of myself as a huge, fat person!!
U: But she said huge superstar, though, didn't she? In a metaphorical sense!
T: She said huge, okay?
I: In a metaphoriacal sense!
T (to Ulrike): He's just messing with your head, it's okay (awww)
U: What about school? Are you not meant to go to school?
T: No, right now, we're on summer break, because we're doing this
I: In the States
U: What about normally?
T: We just take our books with us, as we travel. We've always homeschooled, even before we sang
U: Really?
T: Or our parents would teach us
U: Do you have a tutor or something?
T: Our parents are our tutors and they travel with us and..
I: You can also get all kinds of really cool curriculums, that are basically like a teacher and a book kind of thing. And you can use, ehmm, you know, now CD ROM encyclopedias, the Internet, all that stuff. There's a lot of ways to get information
U: Yes, indeed. And your dad's your manager, is that right?
I: Ehm, actually we have a manager, but I guess, you could say our parents are kind of our managers, in the sense that..
T: Because they do travel around with us and they you know, kind of help business-whise, and also they, it makes this a little more interesting, because they take a little bit of the pressure off, because they are travelling around with you.
I: Helping you sort everything, yeah
U: Sort of makes this a family business then?
I: Something like that, yeah
U: Do you bring your brothers and sisters with you?
I: We actually, yeah, our family travels with us. Our brothers and sisters and everything are going with us on tour, so they're actually here. Well not here, here
T: Not here, here, but you know, in London
U: Okay, cool, so what are your plans after this?
T: Well, after today? Well we'll be heading back, we'll be heading to Canada, to start the tour in North America, and then once that finishes, as we said, you know, working on the next album.
U: Great, cool. It was great having you here, thank you very much!
T: Hopefully we'll be back!
I: Yeah Thank you!!
They play Thinking of you
