Underneath
Pop/rock:
Hanson, Underneath (* * ˝) From the start, brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson distinguished themselves from their teen-pop peers by crafting their own tunes and drawing on classic rock and R&B influences. Now, at the ripe old ages of 23, 20 and 18, the siblings aspire to a more patently mature, muscular approach. None of their new tunes are as instantly irresistible as 1997's breakthrough hit MmmBop, and some flirt with the kind of plodding bombast that suggests too many hours spent listening to subpar Led Zeppelin imitators. Still, buoyant tracks such as Lost Without Each Other and Get Up and Go deliver firmer hooks and more musical dexterity than many of this still-tender trio's elders have offered lately. —Elysa Gardner
