'This Time' times three

Taylor Hanson telephoned the Tulsa World from Rio De Janeiro on Monday after learning that Hanson was the winner in three categories at Saturday's Spot Music Awards.

"We are so honored by these awards, so excited and so grateful to our hometown fans," says Taylor, who along with brothers Isaac and Zac, is on the last leg of a tour in South America.

"We've always loved and appreciated Tulsa, because we know that without our hometown support we would never have made it this far," said Taylor. "And we look forward to doing more for Tulsa in the future" The group learned about the wins-in the Best Rock Act, Best National Album, and Artist of the Year categories-earlier Monday when their mother telephoned the news to their Rio hotel room. Unreliable telephone lines had thwarted Mrs. Hanson's earlier efforts to contact them. Taylor said he was calling just before he and his brothers were scheduled to film an appearance on a Brazilian television show. "Actually, I don't know anything about the program - just that we're getting ready to go on." After kicking off the band's tour in Tulsa last July, Hanson performed more than 40 concerts in the U.S. before leaving for South America The group played in Argentina and Chile before arriving in Brazil. "We expect to complete about 60 concerts on this tour," said Taylor. "I think we'll be getting home some time next week." The Tulsa World-sponsored Spot Music Awards ceremony was held last Saturday at the Brady Theatre before a star-studded audience of Tulsa music industry celebrities. Winners in 15 musical categories were chosen by the votes of the Tulsa World Readers.
