Hanson.net Chat
December 5th, 2001

Hanson Says: Hey everybody, thanks for coming to the chat. We hope you haven't been waiting too long, let's get this thing started.
suzzie asks I was wondering if you're still working on the documentary? ...and do you still want to try and get it entered at Sundance?
Taylor answers: We are definitely working on the documentary. We have begun the early parts of production for the documentary. We were hoping to get into the editing stages come January. So in regard to Sundance, at this point Sundance is going to happen before the documentary is done, but there are many other film festivals around the country that we'll probably be trying to get the documentary into.
loveless asks Being a musician is not easy. It takes a lot of studying and hard work. And when you get famous, you have to work even harder. Of all the things you have to do (recording the album, promoting it, touring, etc asks, what is the part of your job you enjoy the most and what is the part you'd choose just not to do it, if you could?
Taylor answers: The most enjoyable part of being a musician is just that--playing music, being a musician. BUT it's got to be the writing of the song that really makes it the most enjoyable. The creation. You are able to take songs and concepts and make them into a reality. Take emotions that you conjure up and relate them to other people through the music. And maybe make people think a little bit about their life or what you're trying to say...if anything at all.
savemeimdtba asks Hi Hanson, have you ever felt embarrassed to share your music with your parents? Since it does reveal your deepest emotions... Kristi, GA
Taylor answers: I think emotions... if you're not afraid to express them to 100s of thousands, millions of other people in the world, I don't know why you'd be afraid to share them with your parents
Denisse De Monterrey asks Ok my name is Denisse Nolasco I'm 16 years old and my questions are:When you are going to write a song, what do you wrote fisrt, the lyric of the music? and Are you going to relsease a video about the Tour This Time Around 2000?
Taylor answers: Well, it depends on the song. Some of the songs are inspired by a lyrical idea. It depends on what song you're talking about. You can be led in different ways. In different songs, you can maybe trace where the original inspiration came from.
ValerieC asks Which of you sings french on the album? awesome langue! know any others?
Taylor answers: There is one song that Ike was singing in French. It isn't positive if it will make the album, but it is a very cool song.
andforallthis asks Hey Hanson, I'm Erin :) Do any of you ever lurk at alt.fan.hanson?
Taylor answers: No, I've never visited that site
ashley16 asks hanson, my name is Ashley and i would like to know what is you advise to people who want nothing more than to sing and thats all they dream about day and night but dont have any confindence in themselves to go out and do it? Please answer!
Taylor answers: Well, if you dream that much and you want to sing tha tmuch, then somewhere deep inside of you, you're bound to think that you are at LEAST pretty good. So go out there and do the best you can. Try your best according to that.
aLiShA asks Hanson, have you been to good concerts lately? If so, which ones? (Alisha..MI)
Taylor answers: Ben Folds, U2, Wilco, Phantom Planet, Michelle Branch,... but by far U2 is the best. They still have a couple of shows left this year. So pay as much money as you have to see them because they are the best.
moe_tell asks : How has George Harrison's death affected you personally, and as a fellow musician?
Taylor answers: Well, George Harrison is very possibly one of the most famous Rock and Rollers ever ... so it has to affect you somehow. I was very sad to hear that he'd passed away. I'd always hoped that there might have been some kind of reunion at some point of the three remaining Beatles. I think that this point though, that that obviously won't happen. The great thing about George was is that he may have died in the physical sense, but the music and that which he expressed through that may possibly live forever.
itzafanson asks What's the biggest arguement you've had between the 3 of you?
Taylor answers: We've argued about so many things that I wouldn't be able to list one particular argument. Believe it or not, our most heated arguments are when we're in the studio--when you're putting it all on the line to make the best possible album. That's when the fighting gets the most intense. We've been lucky that we haven't held many grudges though.
loise4797 asks What made you decide to make a cameo on Frank McKlusky, C.I. and also Sabrina The Teenage Witch? Loise, CA
Taylor answers: I think the reason that you do things like that is to get exposure in other areas of a possible audience. It's just kind of one of those things you do. You get opportunities ... someone says "Do you want to be in this comedy..." and you think it's very simple and easy to do. There's not much thought put into it.
tlctrsurs asks In the past, you have eluded to your spiritual sides in a very non-descript sort of way (everything to be read between the lines). In light of all the current events, have you felt it necessary to change direction a bit--even perhaps write differently? To be a little more bold and "out there"?
Taylor answers: I think I've found it very positive and very constructive that people have found peace ... have found foundation in something other than themselves. I think it's very important because more often than not, you CAN'T explain anything more than yourself. I take songwriting and these things in a day to day manner. It is possible that you can allude to something more spiritual because of things that may have happened in your life. As for an overlaying theme on our record, or a stronger reference to spiritual matters, I really can't say.
nyhansonfan asks If you had any wish for this Holiday Season, what would it be?
Taylor answers: I'd like to have a "white" Christmas. And maybe a little bit of relaxation and peace amongst the nation.
jenmbee asks Recently in a reply you made to a question in askhansonask, you mentioned that you enjoy classical music and I was wondering what some of your favorite composers were? Also would you guys ever incorporate classical music into your own, for example like Alicia Keys does with her music or how sometimes bands will play with full orchestras.
Taylor answers: Classical music is the earliest form of modern pop music that exists, really. So of course, there are many situations which artists have incorporated classical music into their own, for example The Beatles, and Alicia Keyes. I think we're always interested in doing this. It all has to do with finding a piece of music that inspired you. Once you have that, the possibilities are boundless. We have also talked about incorporating an orchestra or choir into some form of performance or record in some more prominent way.
Karen01 asks Ike, I've seen you in concert 3 times now and have noticed that you often get into the music like you are rocking out or losing yourself in the music, so I guess my question is are you rocking out or losing yourself in the music? Or maybe neither and it just looks like that from the audience ...
Taylor answers: I've found myself getting in to the music that often. Music is a way of becoming its own thing ... almost taking you on a ride as you are performing it. I know there are times that we've done shows that are nearly 3 hours long and I don't even notice it. I can almost snap my fingers and not even notice it. The music carrys me along .. but I've also been known to forget what I am doing, from time to time.
heymaura asks I loved the article about you and your grandma in Modern Maturity. She seems cool! Does your grandma go to Hanson concerts and have the CDs like we all do? And does she feel like a local celebrity after being on the cover of the magazine? Tell her we said hi! --Maura
Isaac answers: Maura, I'm sure my grandmother will appreciate your greetings. I'll tell her you said hello. That was a very fun article to do. She felt like a local celebrity for a month. She's quite a lady, she does have every CD, every magazine and gets quite a kick out of it all.
leigh1 asks If you could attend any concert from 1950 to 1980, other than the Beatles, who would you each go see and why?
Isaac answers: I would have gone to see the Doors at the Filmore in the 60s. (You know that's an impossible question ask)
damore asks Hi guys i live in Brazil...and if u guys could choose other language to record an album....what would it be? i think spanish is a pretty language...thanks...Adriana D'Amore/21
Isaac answers: Actually Portugese would be a very interesting language to record in. And I agree, Spanish is very pretty. We actually wrote a song in French, and I'm excited to translate pieces of that into other languages ... maybe Spanish. We'll see what after that.
annsuzan asks We would like to know, what Hanson's favorite or most memorable Christmas tradition is? Thanks a lot!!! ~Catie and Andrea
Isaac answers: A Hanson Christmas is a very loud and boisterous one. One of the more recent traditions is to get a Christmas tree which is extremely large and difficult to set up. Last year's Christmas tree was 13 ft. high ...
tiffy asks Do you usually notice when your music evolves, that it maybe leans a different way than it did a year ago or does it even surprise you when it happens?
Isaac answers: It absolutely surprises me. There are so many types of music that I can really get off on that it can really surprise me what songs I'm inspired to write. That's why we always talk about the album that we are going to write because of how it is all put together
jesnicole asks on the tta tour, you covered a few songs ("piece of my heart," "kate," "crosstown traffic," etc.) that fans might not have been familiar w/. what other songs would you like to expose fans to?
Isaac answers: I'm not going to answer that question with a list of songs, but I can promise you that next tour we will play some songs you haven't heard before that you will learn to love.
meghan1985 asks Hey guys, how about making the last issue of MOE the BIGGEST issue ever?
Isaac answers: The biggest issue ever? Meghan, MOE has just been the coolest thing for us to get to do. We'll make the last issue as cool as we can for you and for us. We'll put in all kinds of cool pictures and stuff to make it the biggest and best ever. How big should we make it?
dfs915 asks Have you heard the version of "Thinking of You" on the Baha Men's latest album? If so, what do you think of it?
Isaac answers: No, I actually have not heard that. But I'm going to go check it out.
echo asks Hey guys, this is sort of a two part question...Do you guys find it hard to trust people not to tell things you don't want the public to know about? Do you feel more guarded about your personal life now that your in the spotlight so much? Thanks, Molly from Nashville
Isaac answers: You know Molly, if we were that worried about it, then we could be pretty strange individuals. Wait I take that back, we are strange individuals. But you can't be too guarded about that. Your good friends are your good friends, and you're always just choosing them well.
psychokitty asks How much pressure does the record company give you in the type of songs you put in your album?
Isaac answers: Well, the record label has a big role in making decisions as far as singles go and videos go. So there's a lot of interaction for that stuff going on. But when it comes to the music, that's all about us and the direction we'd like to take it.
Ital asks Do you listen to reggae and do you know Joe Higgs?
Isaac answers: Reggae is not number 1 on my list. I'll have to go check out Joe Higgs.
SusieT asks How does what happened on September 11 effect you as a musical artist, where part of your job is traveling?
Isaac answers: Well, just like any American, we're all just a little bit more aware of every plane that we get on, every seat that we get on in that plane, but we can't worry about it that much because life must go on.
littlelave asks Have any of you gotten a speeding ticket yet? Or any traffic violations? come on fess up!
Isaac answers: Actually, I've had no tickets, but a few fender benders here and there.
dfs915 asks At one point, you had mentioned possibly touring before the album was completed. Are you still thinking of doing that? Any ideas on when you might be touring next? We're all looking forward to seeing you again! Thank you. --Debra
Isaac answers: We were very interested in touring before the year was over, and I know many of you were skeptical of that, but we really had serious plans to try and make that happen. It looks like we will be doing a few select shows early next year before the next record is out, so hopefully you guys can come check that out.
raman asks How do you feel after singing the national anthem in public after the whole 9/11 events. I think it was a forbearer on the times to come ... but before the times, if you know what I'm saying ... gosh lol ...
Isaac answers: I've always taken singing the National Anthem in a very spiritual sense. I'm sure it means a lot more now, especially to young people, and it's something I don't ever want to take for granted.
dilllllon asks Do you feel the need to write spiritually and in perspective after the 9/11 tragedy so far as your songwriting is concerned?
Isaac answers: I wouldn't put it on my list to write the next "Candle in the Wind" for America, but it is definitely a subject matter that strikes you when you're writing a song. I hope to write something that might strike a chord in other people. But at the moment, no ....
Iluv3 I know this sounds kind of morbid but if you could bring back one musician who has passed on, who would you choose? -cindy
Zac answers: Good question, I'd bring back George Harrison, so that they could still do the 3 Beatle reunion.
nat29 asks Hey guys! I just wanted to know if, for the next tour, if you'll do the small theater venues again or the larger stadiums. Personally, (I know you want my opinion :p I liked the smaller venues. It was so much more intimate and from every seat you could still see the stage. I think you should do that again :D LOL. But, you know, stadiums are cool too :p Cya next tour!
Zac answers: That's a good question. When we come to that, we'll decide. But at the moment, I think we're feeling a little bit of both. But it'll all change once we get done with recording and start thinking in a more specific sort of way.
Allister asks So ... tell us ... when is the next album going to come out?
Zac answers: Yeah, a question for all questions. Maybe it'll be next year, but plans keep changing and schedules get delayed or pushed up. So early-to-mid next year ... that's what we're hoping.
hansonsbish asks From what I've read in magazines, you guys signed a 6 album deal with Mercury. This next album will be the sixth, correct? If that is the case, then what are your plans label/contract wise?
Zac answers: That's not completely correct. It was a 9 album deal, but you're always thinking about things like that ... things you'll do: extend if you like the people you're working with, and things like that.
carpoolmom asks If you could put together a "dream" concert, who would be in the line-up?
Zac answers: Beatles, U2, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and let's see who else? Willie Nelson! That's just a start!
hansonschumca asks HANSON, If you had to pick one word to define the difference between this upcoming cd and "This Time Around" what would it be? X's and Oreo O's, Jasmin/FL
    Zac answers: Different.
Everyone asks Zac and Taylor - end the rumors - do either of you wear clear braces?
Zac answers: We both wear them.
Kim asks Do you guys plan on keeping hansonline.com or are you just going to stick to hanson.net?
Zac answers: At the moment, there are not any plans to drop any website.
Jared asks Do you still listen to vinyl lp's and if so, do you have a favorite?
Zac answers: I do have a record player at home. I don't listen to records too often, but at this point it's difficult to find records on vinyl. But a couple of days ago I was listening to an old mariachi band on a 500 year old crank player, and the sound was just amazing.
Janet lol from Boston, Did you meet Bababra Eden when you were filming the Sabrina episode?
    Zac answers: Yes.
jessicafein asks Who do you see as being the first to be married
Zac answers: I've always seen myself as being last because I'm the youngest. But because of that I'd probably see myself getting married first because of the irony. I would ironically always think that I'll find myself last but find the right woman first.
joy asks Do any of you plan on driving a motorcycle
    Zac answers: Heck Yeah.
I believe it was Isaac first of all because he's older than us, I guess you are referring to a bicycle, but Isaac because of his age.
Zac Says: Thanks so much for joining us and giving us all your questions. I hope we answered some that were puzzling you or that you would like to know. I hope to talk to you guys soon. I think that we're going to be putting up clips of songs so that you can give us feedback to what we are doing. So thanks and bye!!
MODERATOR SAYS: OK..We have to go! Thanks for all the great questions! Goonight All!
