My 3rd Hanson Concert Experience
Tulsa, Oklahoma
This Time Around Tour
July 27, 2000, 8 p.m.

Let me say this. The concert was incredible. I mean, that is the only word for it. Incredible. I went to the kickoff of Hanson’s 2000 tour at the Chapman Music Hall in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a few of my friends and our parents. We sat in the 10th row. Needless to say, it was wondrous. I think some things that made it even better are

1) I had to work for it. (i.e. sitting in line from 4:30-11:00 a.m.)

2) No one knew what to expect. This tour was not nearly as hyped up as the Albertane Tour. Not nearly.

3) I was sitting in the 10th row. Incredible.

The only thing that disappointed me was that there was no opening act. I was kind of looking forward to seeing Admiral Twin again, but when they walked out onto the stage, I completely forgot my disappointment. All right, here’s how it went.

First of all, Hanson was 30 minutes late getting on stage. I can overlook that. While we were waiting, they played various songs, such as Aerosmith and Tom Petty. I was pretty glad when they finally got out there, considering the fact that I got hit in the head by a beach ball a few times, and the girls in front of me were screaming annoying little cheers. Unlike the Albertane Tour, there was no great entrance or anything. You just saw the little light bulbs from the flashlights at the side of the stage. And then there they were. Just there in front of their instruments. I was wondering how they were going to begin their shows, and I got my answer. You Never Know. I enjoyed that. Other songs were “Look at You”, “Speechless”, etc. etc. Basically all of Middle of Nowhere besides “Weird” and “I Will Come To You”, and “With You In Your Dreams.” I was slightly disappointed, I really enjoy hearing that song played live. Let’s see…what else did they play? Let me check my handy-dandy little song checklist right here in the program. Covers they played: “Piece of My Heart” by Janis Joplin, “Magic Carpet Ride” by Steppenwolf, and “Can’t Always Get What You Want” by the Rolling Stones. (The latter was incredible! They did a great job!) The only song off of 3 Car Garage/Boomerang/Mmmbop was Stories. Basically all of This Time Around was performed. And of course, the last three songs were “Mmmbop”, “Man From Milwaukee”, and “Magic Carpet Ride”, respectively. In all the show was incredible, and I can’t wait to go back!

Highlights/Semi-interesting Tidbits/Stupid Things we Noticed

· During Man From Milwaukee, when Zac does his “Mother bird, calling baby bird” thing, instead of the usual, he said “Baby bird, wazzahhhh!” Cute.

· At the very, very beginning of the concert, as in the first two songs, Zac kept holding his finger to his ear, and drumming with one hand. Also, after every song, he would stick his fingers back in his ears. And Isaac’s ear monitor fell out.. Defective in-ear monitors?

· One thing that made the concert better than the Albertane concerts was that Taylor and Isaac both moved around the stage a lot more. They didn’t just stand behind the microphones the whole time. (Well, Taylor did, he had a cordless mic.)

· The clothing choices were interesting. Um, let’s see. Taylor wore skin-tight black leather pants with a chain. Isaac wore a denim shirt with flower-thingies on it, and khakis. And Zac wore a red t-shirt that said “United States Marine Corps” with green pants. I notice these things.

· In between “Look at You” and “A Minute Without You”: “Well, after looking at you, I can’t live a minute without you!”

· Zac, in between “Hand In Hand” and “Speechless”: “After seeing you hand in hand with another man, I’m…what’s the word? Oh! Speechless!”

· While returning for the encore: “Man, you guys didn’t think we’d leave without taking you on a ‘Magic Carpet Ride’, did you?”

· The water incident. Isaac and Zac were introducing a song (due to my somewhat defective memory, I can’t remember which one), and Taylor proceeded to take a drink, as the song was being introduced. He realized that he was going to need to start playing rather soon, and dropped the water bottle to the ground, spilling it all over everything. A tour assistant ran onto stage, and grabbed the bottle to prevent it from causing an electric shock. After the song ended, Taylor proceeded to turn around and yell at the guy that he needed water really bad. How very humorous.

· Ah yes, the “Lucy” incident. I suppose this is one of the first times that Hanson have ever played this song live. I personally thought it sounded wonderful. Apparently, Zac did not. He began to sing, and turned to Taylor as if to say, “I can’t do this by myself.” Therefore, they finished singing the song together.

· During the acoustic set, since they were all sitting down, Isaac needed a stand for his guitar whilst he was not playing it. I think it was missing.

· At one point, a member of the backup crew was handing a different guitar to Isaac, and it must’ve been the wrong one. The crew had to run and grab another one.

· Isaac played the wrong song. The guys had already played “Stories”, and were about to play “Wish That I Was There.” Isaac must really enjoy “Stories” cause he tried to play it again.

· I don’t think the acoustic set had been rehearsed enough. After every song, the lights would go off, and you could see the guys pointing at each other, trying to figure out what was going on.

· Their tradition of introducing the backup players is really sweet. They even bowed down to them this time. It was like worship.

· Aww…Zac bowed down to the audience at the end.

· Zac and Isaac had joined hands to take their bows, and um, Taylor was on the other side of the stage shaking hands and getting ready to run offstage.

· My favorite. The thong incident. Some perverted girl from way behind me decided to throw her thong up on stage. I saw it fly through the air, but didn’t comprehend what it was. As he was leaving the stage, Isaac got a disgusted look on his face, and tossed it back into the audience. I realized just what the flying object had been at that point. *snickers*

High point of the show: When Taylor started the intro to “If Only.” He was standing in the middle of the stage, and had the harmonica hidden in his hand with the microphone. There was no warning, no introduction to the song, just the harmonica. It was amazing.

Bottom line: Wow. Incredible. Even my mom thought so.
